White House gets open letter from Carbon Motors

Carbon Motors, a boutique company planning to provide the nation's law enforcement with vehicles, has sent an open letter to the White House. The company is after a federal loan so it can begin mak-ing its turbo-diesel law enforcement cruiser.

Getting the cruiser out there

The George W. Bush administra-tion put together a Department of Energy initiative while started the Advanced Technology Car manufacturing allowing the Carbon Motors Corporation to apply for a loan. This loan would allow the company to start creating the E7 police automobile without any consumer versions. AutoBlog reports that the business has waited for two years for the loan so far without any luck.

The White House Cabinet was given an open letter from the compa-ny recently. Hopefully this will allow the start of production on the first bespoke law enforcement interceptor.

All about the automobile

As reported by Carbon's website, the E7 law enforcement vehicle should produce more than 250 horsepower and get from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds. Its price is projected to be comparable with standard po-lice vehicles, which are typically retail automobiles with extensive modifications.

However, the selling point for the Carbon E7 is that it gets a combined gas mileage of 28 to 30 miles per gallon, far more than the typical law enforcement cruiser. By compar-ison, the civilian 2009 Ford Crown Victoria, a wildly popular law enforcement vehi-cle, gets a combined mileage of 19 miles per gallon, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Carbon also asserts the E7 will emit 40 percent less carbon than its gas-powered contemporaries.

AutoBlog explains that BMW will give the E7 its 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder diesel motor. This motor is offered three automobiles right now, such as the 335d, the X5d SUV and a 3-Series sedan.

With the loan, which is expected to be at around $310 million, the company would be able to create 10,000 jobs in Connersville, Ind., where all of the E7 cars would be built. According to WXIN Fox59, over $20,000 E7 cruiser orders have already come in.

Most popular diesel

If the company does get a loan from the DOE and fills the over 20,000 orders it has received, that would make it one of probably the most popular diesel-powered cars on the road.

Since only about 3 percent of passenger vehicle sales in the U.S. are diesel vehicles, according to AutoGuide, there are not a lot of diesel automobiles out there. The Volkswagen Jetta TDI is one of them, and it sold 56,717 of them between Jan and July of this year, producing it the most popular diesel vehicle in the country. Even though nothing else even compares to those sales, the other diesel cars that are popular include the Volkswagen Golf TDI and the BMW X35d.
