Audi e-Tron line to start rolling out soon

By Cornelius Nunev

In the next couple years, Audi is set to begin putting its e-Tron technology in cars that will be showing up in dealerships. A test run is starting soon for the A3 e-Tron and the very first models will be here by 2014.

Le Mans seeing green technolo-gy

Audi's electric version of the R8, dubbed the R8 e-Tron, has been confirmed for production and is intended to arrive sometime in the near future. In the meantime, Audi has been at work on the e-Tron line and intends to use it as a party piece for its racing division.

According to Inside Line, Audi has equipped one of its prototype race vehicles, the R18, with e-Tron technology. The R-18 e-Tron quattro uses two electric motors to drive the front wheels and a 3.7-liter, 503 horsepower turbodiesel V-6 to drive the rear wheels, along with KERS technology to capture electricity from braking. Since both front and back axles are being driven, it thus has four-wheel-drive, a must for any respectable Audi.

The R18 Ultra, a non-hybrid model, and the R-18 e-Tron quattros will race later this year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Intro for few

The ActiveE program is similar to the electric 1 series program that BMW has. It will allow the A3 e-Tron to be shown off in multiple cities. This five-door hatch is fully-electric, according to MotorAuthority. There is also the A1 e-Tron, not be seen in The United States anytime soon, that Audi is introducing in Munich.

A select number of drivers in San Francisco, LA, Denver and Washington, D.C., will be granted the ability to lease the A3 e-Tron. While driving, Audi's technicians and engineers will download and compile data for review in Germany and in America.

With a special 400-volt rapid-charging system, it only takes four hours to recharge the A3 e-Tron. It takes nine hours with a 120-volt plug. It can go 90 miles with 136 horsepower before a gasoline motor takes over as a range extender.

Expectation for Audis

The R8 e-Tron is going to cost well over $100,000 for everyone to purchase, which may be way too much for many people. According to AutoBlog, it will be the first e-Tron to hit the streets. Other versions of e-Tron will be available fairly soon though, including the 2014 model year of the A3 e-Tron quattro. The A4 and Q7 SUV will even be arriving with the technology soon.

Rubert Stadler is the Audi Chairman. He was quoted saying that e-Tron options will be available in all of its models by 2012 by AutoBlog.
